North Powys Tennis Academy (NPTA)
‘Developing constructive pathways to encourage talent’
It has been very clear for some years that optimal junior tennis development in mid-Wales was severely hampered by the lack of both appropriate coaching and a relevant pathway to the neighbouring centres of excellence and wider competition. The latter is also often perceived as complex by parents, clubs and coaches – in particular the present rating and ranking system for juniors.
However over recent years the coaching element has made significant progress with regular sessions now at Montgomery, Llanidloes, Berriew and Newtown and fledgling local tournaments (The Monty Tour).
Nonetheless MUCH MORE is needed to facilitate/encourage player development and relevant links with the centres of excellence/competition.
The overall perception being – that we have some talented young players within our clubs, however they often fail to progress and fulfil their potential due to the lack of appropriate pathways and opportunities within our region.
As a result, we propose to run a monthly academy session for talented players at Newtown in midWales starting January 2016 with the support of the LTA, Powys Sports Development, NPTA and local clubs.
We have recruited an excellent inspirational level 4 coach from Wrexham, Sam Hayes and a level 2 counterpart in mid Wales, Martin Ellacott, to empower these sessions. They will aim to identify and nurture player talent and then drive relevant age adjusted competition as locally as possible to meet rating and other requirements while ensuring that learning is both fun and productive for those who wish.
At the outset we wish to target both boys and girls from age 6-9 and 10-14years (on 31.8.2016).We anticipate the cost per session to be £5 per child and that you will commit to 6 sessions in the first instance (£30).
All sessions would be based at Newtown, one Sunday a month with dates to be confirmed. We would also anticipate stronger links to Wrexham TC, working alongside their development structures.
We would be very grateful if you would canvass your local talent and let us have their names and contact details for future contact and information.
Many thanks in anticipation,
